Allucquere Rosanne Stone aka Sandy Stone: border-bender on numerous fronts – technologies, bodies, communication, identity, gender, art, theory, fact and fiction. Where preconceptions and conventions rule, Stone is there testing and stretching the boundaries. Her book, The War of Desire and Technology at the Close of the Mechanical Age, is a work I return to again and again. It’s not just what she says, but HOW she says it. Weaving the anecdotal with complex theoretical arguments, her explorations in virtuality are simply unrivalled. Next to appreciating her writing, I saw her perform several years ago at V2. She captivated the audience with a lengthy and luscious virtual orgasm in the palm of her hand (of course for safe sex she wore a blue rubber dish-washing glove. Through her writing and performative works, I’m reminded that there can be both humour and humanity in theory. Thanks for being an unconventional and insightful thinker.
