Our society is one not of spectacle, but of surveillance…
Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, trans. Alan Sheridan (New York, 1979), p. 217
I’m currently working on an introduction to a forthcoming publication entitled, Sniff, Scrape, Crawl… a look at privacy, surveillance, and the self-performing subject. The collected essays and visual contributions are the result of a series of public lectures and workshops that took place in early 2011 at the Piet Zwart Institute in the Master Media Design and Communication course.
Later, the research evolved into two panels presented at ISEA Istanbul (2011) (see: Panel 1 & Panel 2). Published by Mute, there will be contributions by Seda Guerses, Nicolas Maleve, Amy Suo Wu, Birgit Bachler, Steve Rushton, Michelle Teran, Inge Hoonte, Marloes van der Valk, and Aymeric Mansoux (plus others to be announced).
